International musical icon Akon in partnership with Bridge International has launched the ‘Light to Learn’ program in Liberia. Light to learn is an initiative that highlights the positive impact of investment in Africa sustainable power and education and the importance of developing both sectors as they propel Liberia and the continent towards a better and brighter future. The musical icon, who arrived here Wednesday, 19 October stressed that quality education in Africa is not a black or white situation, but an African problem, noting lack of education in Africa affects everybody.
Speaking Thursday at a news conference in Monrovia, Liberia Akon said he is in the West African Country to launch the ‘Light to Learn’ initiative, which aims to bring clean, affordable and endless solar energy in schools that will in turn bring about beneficial change to Liberia. He said to be able to empower millions of people in Africa has always been his dream.
Akon also noted that his main goal is to bring light to Africa through public- private partnerships and the ripple effect of this is job creation, safety, commerce and supporting African children in furthering their education.
Also speaking, the CEO of Bridge International Shannon May said, Bridge International is committed to ensuring every Child learns and achieves her full potential. She said Bridge is in 24 schools across the country and is here to improve the performance of pupils, by educating 120,000 primary and nursery pupils in five countries across two continents.
Bridge is responding to the world’s education crisis with effective and affordable solutions, working with parents, donors, and governments to create high performing schools. Liberia’s Minister of Education George Warner lauds Akon for coming to the aid of Liberian students, saying Liberia is always willing to work with him.
